ANSI Class 1, 2 & 3 — Know Your Hi-Vis Class
Different jobs need different hi-vis protection. ANSI/ISEA 107 breaks down visibility requirements by class. Here's what each class means and who it's built for.
ANSI Class 1
Designed for lower-risk environments where workers are exposed to slower-moving vehicles or equipment and have a clear separation from traffic. Common applications include warehouses, distribution centers, parking facilities, and off-road worksites with limited vehicle interaction.
ANSI Class 2
Intended for workers operating near moving vehicles, equipment, or active traffic where greater visibility is required. Often used in construction, utilities, loading docks, airports, and warehouses with significant forklift activity.
ANSI Class 3
The highest level of visibility for workers exposed to high-speed traffic, complex worksites, or low-light conditions. Commonly required for highway crews, emergency responders, utility workers near roadways, and nighttime operations where maximum visibility is critical.

ANSI/ISEA 107 Work Environment Types
In addition to ANSI Class, ANSI/ISEA 107 also uses types to identify the intended work environment:
Type O, Off-Road
For workers in off-road environments where visibility is needed but roadway traffic exposure is limited. Examples include warehouses, distribution centers, industrial facilities, and off-road worksites.
Type R, Roadway
For workers exposed to traffic from public roadways or construction zones. Examples include road construction, transportation, utility, and survey crews.
Type P, Public Safety
For emergency and public safety workers who need high visibility while allowing for role-specific gear and movement. Examples include first responders, law enforcement, and emergency services.
For example: A warehouse worker may need Type O Class 1 or Type O Class 2, while a road construction worker may require Type R Class 2 or Type R Class 3, depending on the work environment and visibility requirements.
